The Human User Manual (HUM)
What if you’re missing what makes change stick?
You've tried the self-help podcasts
Collected the books
Followed the programs everyone else swears by
Changed your circumstances and worked on your relationships
You kept pushing harder, but it still didn’t work
Here's the truth: you're not the problem.
Those approaches may work for someone else, but they weren’t designed for how YOUR nervous system actually works.
This is where you stop forcing yourself into someone else’s box and step into a way that fits your biology.
The same situations keep happening, just in different settings.
The same conflicts show up, just with different people.
You're always the one managing the mood and trying to make things work.
You feel on edge most of the time, even when nothing is obviously wrong.
Small things overwhelm you more than they should.
You know you're capable, but you keep getting pulled into reactions you wish you could take back.
You swing between overreacting and shutting down.
Rest doesn't feel restorative because your mind keeps running, even when your body is tired.
You've done the work and tried the coping strategies, but the same struggles keep showing up.
And quietly, a part of you wonders if something is fundamentally wrong with you.
Does this feel familiar?
Even though another part keeps hoping there's a real explanation.
You’ve probably found yourself…
Some of it helps for a while, but the same patterns return:
>> Working on communication and boundaries, only to end up in the same dynamic yet again.
>> Changing your job, your routine, or your environment, only to find the same struggles waiting for you.
>> Telling yourself to calm down and be more present, only to find your mind still racing and your body still braced for what comes next.
>> Trying to stay steady and not take things personally, only to find yourself right back in the same reactive patterns the moment things feel difficult.
Consulting another expert
Reading another book
Saving another post, hoping this one finally explains it
Trying therapy, meditation, or journaling
Here’s why these patterns keep returning:
Most tools focus on what to do next. They don't account for the state your body’s in when you're trying to change.
When your nervous system is in a stress response, logic, insight, and willpower don't land the way you expect them to.
That's not a flaw. It's human biology.
Change doesn't fail because you didn't try hard enough.
It fails because no one taught you how to work with your nervous system first.
Now imagine this…
Understanding what's actually happening in your body when stress hits, not so you can fix yourself,
but so you can finally stop fighting yourself.
Noticing the moment before you react and choosing a response you feel good about later,
not perfectly, just more often.
Responding to stress without getting stuck in it.
Feeling more grounded in your own body instead of constantly bracing for what comes next.
Moving through conversations without replaying them all day.
Taking things less personally and feeling steadier in your relationships.
Trusting yourself in moments that used to hijack you,
so you show up as the version of yourself you actually want to be.
Change starts to feel calmer and more sustainable.
It fits into your real life instead of asking you to become someone else.
This isn't about trying harder.
It's about working with the system that has been running the show all along.
And when you finally understand how your nervous system works,
everything begins to shift.
Understand Your Wiring. Transform Your Life.
Meet The Human User Manual (HUM)
The Human User Manual finally explains why you keep getting stuck in the same stress, habit, and relationship patterns. You'll see why willpower has never worked and learn to work with your nervous system instead of fighting it, so you can respond differently when it matters most. This is where change stops feeling forced and starts feeling possible.
You'll finally feel more grounded, more capable, and more in control because this time the process fits your real life,
not someone else's formula.
At the end of The Human User Manual you’ll know how to:
RECOGNIZE WHAT’S RUNNING THE SHOW
Recognize when your nervous system is running an old pattern before it takes over your thoughts and actions. Whether it shows up as stress that won't let go, the same relationship dynamic playing out again, or a habit loop you can't seem to break, you'll understand what's actually happening in your body so you can finally do something about it.
SHIFT YOUR RESPONSE
Use practical, nervous system-based tools to shift out of fight, flight, freeze, or fawn responses before they run the show. You'll learn how to regulate in real time, in actual stressful moments, not just when things are calm.
This is what lets you respond differently in the moments that used to hijack you, the ones you used to replay for days.
MAKE CHANGE ACTUALLY STICK
Create sustainable change that fits your real life by working with your biology instead of fighting it.
You'll stop forcing yourself into strategies that don't match how you're wired and start making shifts that actually translate into lasting change, not just temporary relief that fades after a few weeks.
With this course, you’ll learn to recognize what’s happening in your nervous system before it takes over your thoughts and reactions, so you can shift the patterns driving your stress, relationships, and daily life and create change that actually sticks.
You get years of access to HUM.
Think of it as a resource you can keep coming back to as long as I’m here, teaching this work, and supporting the platform.
I USE IT IN EVERYDAY STRESS
“HUM helped me understand my nervous system in a way that finally made sense. It explained why my body keeps going back to familiar reactions and how those patterns were created to protect me. Instead of feeling overwhelmed or broken, I felt informed and capable. This course gave me practical tools I can actually use in everyday stress, not just ideas that sound good on paper.”
— Rose K.
Real Life Takeaways from HUM
IT’S CHANGED MY INTERACTIONS
“HUM taught me to pause before responding when emotions are high. I used to react quickly and regret it later, but now I recognize what is happening in my body and give myself a moment before engaging. That small shift has changed everything. I walk away from difficult situations feeling proud of how I responded, or proud that I chose not to react at all.”
— Kristen V.
I DON’T TAKE THINGS SO PERSONALLY
“After HUM, I started seeing my own reactions and the reactions of others differently. Understanding how nervous system patterns form helped me stop taking certain behaviors personally and have more grace for myself and my spouse. The way this course explains stress responses made everything feel clearer and more workable. It feels like something every human should have learned much earlier in life.”
—Emily S.
I CAN DECREASE THE PRESSURE
“HUM helped me understand why I feel so depleted and impatient by the end of the day, especially as a mom, and it did so without making me feel like I needed to overhaul my family or my life. I learned that there are small things I can do throughout the day to support my nervous system and prevent stress from constantly building. Understanding how nervous system responses are shaped by how we grow up gave me more compassion for myself and awareness of my kids’ nervous systems too. It made the science feel accessible, meaningful, and genuinely usable in real life.”
— Jhos D.
What do you actually find inside The Human User Manual?
Inside HUM, you’ll find 12 concise, easy-to-digest modules blending neuroscience, mindfulness, and practical coaching tools designed for real-life application.
Plus, you’ll get a guided self-coaching workbook with reflection prompts to help you pause, process, and
apply what you’re learning to real life, access to a library of short nervous system regulation breaks you can use anytime,
and live monthly group calls with Jen for continued support and integration.
Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll explore inside each module:
-
Everything starts here
You’ll understand the system behind your reactions and habits, and why lasting change starts here, not with willpower or mindset alone.
-
Your body’s watchtower never sleeps
You’ll recognize how your body constantly scans for safety, connection, and choice, and how this shapes your reactions with others before you even have time to think.
-
You were wired long before you could choose
You’ll see how your nervous system learned to handle stress early on, and why working with those defaults changes how you show up in work, conflict, and connection.
-
Your body doesn’t know the difference
You’ll understand why everyday moments can trigger big reactions, and how your body learned to respond like something is drastically wrong, even when nothing actually is.
-
Being stuck is not the same as being broken
You’ll reframe being stuck as a nervous system state, not a personal failure, and understand why the same loops keep showing up in your habits, communication, and choices.
-
Five states, one nervous system
You’ll be introduced to the five nervous system states and understand why every human has them, how they support survival, and why noticing when you or others are in a stress response matters more than labeling it.
-
This is the state you’ve been waiting for
You’ll learn where clarity, calm, connection, and creativity actually come from, and how these states support healthier communication, problem solving, and presence in your relationships.
-
Meet your built in survival settings
You’ll understand your go-to stress responses and how these familiar reactions are often where you get stuck, so you can start shifting them with awareness instead of self-blame.
-
Your body gives away the secret
You’ll learn how to read your body’s early signals, so you can catch reactions sooner and respond with more choice in moments that usually escalate or shut you down.
-
Familiar≠ helpful
You’ll recognize why familiar patterns repeat even when they’re unhelpful, and how to interrupt the cycle at the nervous system level in real-life situations and relationships.
-
Calm isn’t forced, it’s rewired
You’ll learn what true nervous system regulation really is, let go of common myths about calming down, and learn practical, everyday tools to create steadiness from the inside out.
-
Now you’ve got the manual. What’s next?
You’ll integrate everything you’ve learned so you can continue responding differently, building trust with yourself, and creating change that finally lasts.
This isn’t
“learn it and forget it”
These bonuses ensure what you learn doesn’t just make sense, it makes a difference in your daily life.
For making HUM your own:
The Application Journal
You’ll receive a guided reflection journal with coaching prompts that help you pause, notice, and apply what you’re learning to your real life. These are not homework or assignments. Meet Your Instructor
Hi, I'm Jen Carter, a certified integrative health coach and certified relationship coach. Most clients call me their life coach because my work sits at the intersection of personal, professional, and relationship growth. I help people understand how their nervous system shapes their thoughts, reactions, and habits so they can stop fighting themselves and start creating real change. That lens is the foundation of everything I do and the heart of The Human User Manual.
My path here was shaped by a long-standing love of things making sense, starting with studying neuroscience in physical therapy school at the University of Kansas Medical Center. I followed that passion into early childhood intervention, working with infants coming straight out of the NICU. Years later, after experiencing the impact of coaching in my own life during a season of overwhelm and self-doubt, I trained at Duke Integrative Medicine and later added certifications at The Center for Thriving Relationships and Fisher Relationship Coaching Academy. Over the past seven years, I've helped clients stop repeating patterns that don't serve them by changing the underlying system that keeps them stuck, not by adding more tools, but by building understanding, inner stability, and self-trust.
For years, I shared this framework only in my private coaching practice, but my clients kept insisting that everyone needs to understand it. Since I can't work one-on-one with every person who needs this clarity, I created HUM so this life-changing understanding could reach beyond the walls of my practice. The course distills years of neuroscience study, lived experience, and client work into a practical framework that gives you what strategies alone cannot: the understanding that makes lasting change possible.
Your HUM enrollment includes:
The full 12-module HUM video course
A guided self-coaching workbook for reflection and application, in print and digital formats
6 months of live monthly group calls with Jen for integration and regulation
An on-demand library of short regulation breaks for everyday moments
A program valued at over $1,100, yours for $297
Frequently Asked Questions
-
HUM is a self-paced online course that helps you understand why you keep getting stuck in the same stress, habit, and relationship patterns.
Instead of adding more tools or trying harder, HUM teaches you how your nervous system works so you can finally stop fighting yourself and start working with how you're actually wired. This is where change stops feeling forced and starts feeling possible.
-
HUM is for people who have tried to change but keep ending up in the same patterns.
You feel stressed, reactive, or stuck. You've tried the podcasts, read the books, maybe even done therapy. Some of it helped for a while, but the same struggles keep showing up. You're ready to understand what's actually been running the show so you can finally create change that lasts.
You don't need any background in neuroscience or personal development to benefit from HUM. Everything is explained in clear, everyday language.
-
HUM includes just over two hours of video content broken into 12 short, digestible modules.
You also get:
A reflection journal with prompts to help you process and apply what you're learning (these aren't required homework, just invitations to reflect)
A live, monthly call with Jen including nervous system regulation, personal growth opportunities, and answers to your questions
A library of nervous system regulation breaks you can use anytime
Long-term access to all course materials
Everything is designed to be practical and easy to integrate into your real life.
-
Yes. HUM is completely self-paced.
You can move through it in a few hours or take weeks. There's no falling behind and no right way to do it. HUM is designed to support your nervous system by fitting your life, not the other way around.
-
Support for overwhelm is built into the course.
Nervous system regulation breaks are woven throughout the modules, and you can access them anytime in the breathing break library. HUM is designed to help you feel more grounded, not more stressed.
-
Absolutely. When you understand your nervous system and everyone else's, you gain an entirely new perspective on human interaction.
HUM teaches you what's actually happening in your body during conflict, tension, or connection, and gives you tools to regulate your nervous system in the moment. This understanding is what's been missing. You'll finally see why you react the way you do and what needs to happen for you to respond differently.
The work of changing your patterns still takes practice, but HUM gives you the foundation that makes that practice actually effective instead of just another strategy that doesn't stick.
-
Yes. HUM helps you understand what's happening in your nervous system during work stress, from emails that feel like threats to meetings that trigger anxiety.
You'll learn to recognize when your body is in a stress response and how to regulate before you react. This is the piece that's been missing from all the communication strategies and stress management tips you've tried.
Understanding your nervous system doesn't instantly change your behavior, but it gives you what you need to actually start changing it. Without this foundation, you're trying to manage symptoms without addressing what's driving them.
-
Absolutely. Parenting brings up every nervous system pattern you have, often multiple times a day.
HUM helps you understand why you snap when you don't want to, why you shut down when your child is dysregulated, and what's actually happening in your body (and theirs) in those moments. You'll learn practical regulation tools you can use before, during, and after stressful parenting moments.
This won't instantly make you the calm parent you want to be, but it gives you the understanding and tools to actually start getting there. Without knowing how your nervous system works, you're left trying approaches that don't address what's actually driving your reactions.
-
You receive long-term access to the course while the platform is actively supported.
My intention is for HUM to be a resource you can return to again and again as your life, stressors, and relationships evolve. If HUM were ever discontinued, advance email notification would be provided whenever possible.
-
No. HUM is an educational course.
It's designed to help you understand yourself and your nervous system patterns, but it doesn't diagnose, treat, or replace therapy or medical care. Many people use HUM alongside coaching, therapy, or on its own as a learning tool.
-
Because you get immediate access to all course materials, refunds aren't offered.
If you believe you have a special circumstance, you're welcome to reach out at jen@jencartercoaching.com and I'll review it personally.

HUM teaches you how the nervous system works instead of giving you more strategies to manage symptoms.
This isn't about positive thinking, pushing through, or trying harder. It's about understanding why you keep getting stuck and how to work with your nervous system so change actually sticks. It's the foundation that makes everything else finally make sense.
I know you’ve tried things before that didn’t work.
I know you might be thinking,
"What if this is just another program I start and don't finish?
Another thing that helps for a while but doesn't stick?"
Here's what's different:
HUM doesn't ask you to adopt someone else's routine, force yourself into a daily practice you can't maintain, or become a different version of yourself. It teaches you how YOU work, so you can finally stop fighting your own biology.
It's not about adding more to your plate. It's about understanding the system that's been running underneath everything you've already tried. The reason nothing else has created lasting change.
This isn't another strategy. It's the foundation that makes strategies actually work.
You've already proven you're willing to do the work. Now it's time to do the work that actually addresses what's been missing all along.
You have two choices right now:
You can close this page and keep going as you have been. There's no judgment in that. If it doesn't feel like the right time, I genuinely wish you the best.
Or you can take the step you came here to take. You can finally understand why you keep getting stuck and how to work with your nervous system instead of against it.
